Stargirl Season 1
Episode No 11 Review And Recap
Episode 11 of Stargirl begins with a short prologue that sees a man with amnesia walking down the street.
After Brainwave kills their son, Pat and Courtney talk to Barbara about their next move. Pat suggests they pack up, but Barbara has other ideas. He wants them all to have a normal day so as not to arouse suspicion. When they go upstairs, a knock on the door throws a serious wrench into things. A man named Sam Curtis is waiting, claiming to be Courtney's Father.
Things are awkward to say the least and she immediately rejects him. Despite having a necklace to match, Kourtney is clearly rocked by it. After talking to Pat, she finally agrees to listen to Sam and see what he has to say.
He talks about their time on Christmas Eve and after reminiscing some old memories, Courtney agrees to have dinner with him. There, Sam reveals where he's been all this time. When they get back together, Sam tells Courtney about their necklace and offers to sell something that binds them together. While he claims to be putting down a deposit on a house, there's definitely something a little odd about the way he talks about it. Regardless, Courtney hands over the necklace as she promises to be back soon. According to him, he calls him Sam, not father.
Our goalkeeper, who suffers from amnesia at school, continues to fight. Amid the sights and sounds, he finds a note for Pat's garage and sets off, sword in tow. In the garage, he gets down on his knees and asks Pat for help. It turns out that he is the Shining Knight, one of the members of an entirely different team that fights evil during Arthur's time.
When talking about his journey, the Shining Knight mentions the "Dragon". Could this have something to do with the Dragon King we know? With his soldiers scattered, the Shining Knight fell and was captured. It could be a sign of things to come with Project: The New America, as Pat listens to his own story and his memory loss is the result of massive brainwashing.
As Henry goes down a dark path, he reveals Stargirl's true identity to Jordan. Despite his insistence on killing them, Jordan rejects Henry's idea due to his love for Barbara. "Make up your mind soon old friend or I'll take your place," Henry warns before leaving.
As he does so, Jordan accesses Barbara's work computer and checks her search history. There, he sees a newspaper article about Icicle killing Starman. This is enough ammunition for him to come up with an original plan.
When he gets home, Pat promises to be there for Courtney. She throws her arms around Pat's neck and cries as she tries to hold back the tears. Behind this, Pat runs in and confronts Sam about what happened. Pat tells him not to come back and punches him in the jaw after a pretty nasty fight with Barbara. It's an incredibly satisfying moment, and one that empowers Pat even more than Courtney's support—he's more of a Dad than Sam is.
Rejecting her superhero connections, Courtney goes to school and tells the others that she's not a Star Girl. He blames himself for Henry's death and says he can't have any more blood on his hands.
After dinner, Henry Senior addresses the school, but telepathically listens to Courtney. Brainwave warns him that he's coming, and he returns home, desperate to get the staff to work. Being out of a job, Courtney is convinced that the crew won't work for her since she's not Starman's daughter.
Pat, however, has a different theory. It won't work until the team believes in themselves again and uses their powers with Barbara and Pat. Blindfolded, he eventually manages to get the workers working for him again.
As the episode ends, Henry and Jordan are finally on the same page and agree to take Courtney's entire family out. As they speak, the camera pans to a countdown featuring a satellite. Time is running out. Tick, tick.
Episode Review
Despite a lot of melodrama, Stargirl does a great job of raising the emotional stakes for all involved. Courtney finds her faith in everything she knows wavering, and throughout the episode, she gets some much-needed insight into what she'll do next.
There's a similar emphasis on Pat, one that sees him slide easily into the role of Courtney's Father. Seeing Sam and Pat together and the stark difference between them is an important juxtaposition that shows that Courtney's Father figure is closer to home than she realizes.
While the JSA's supporting players have little screen time, this is really an episode about the Whitmore's. In that respect, the series does a great job of portraying everyone's struggles as a quick lead-in to Project: New America.
How The Shining Knight fits into all of this, and whether or not we'll get a definitive ending, remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure - you won't want to miss the finale.
