Stargirl Season 1
Episode No 12 Review And Recap
Stargirl returns for the penultimate episode of this first season, and boy, does she deliver! Between some crazy action set-pieces and surprisingly good drama, Stargirl manages to hit the ground running in episode 13.
Stargirl episode 12 confirms one thing - the final battle is finally here. The clock is ticking and time is running out. The sportsman and the tiger are on the hunt, and the Dragon King is preparing his machine for broadcast.
Gambler will light up the whole country when he starts the machine. Brainwave will then reprogram their minds and force everyone to see their vision of the future.
Realizing that the whole family knows the superhero secret, Pat takes Mike to the garage to confess the truth. Only, when Mike catches his fingers with a screwdriver, he gets angry and yells at his son. As Mike walks away, Crusher suddenly arrives at the garage and confronts him.
Upstairs, Tiger attacks Barbara and chases her around the house. However, Courtney arrives with a squad and attacks him. A huge brawl ensues and the two fight to a crescendo with Mike rescuing Pat and Barbara helping Courtney as the camera cuts back and forth between the basement and upstairs.
Still in the family safe, Pat rallies the troops and heads to the cabin with the other JSA members. The Shining Knight is also seen eating, along with Pat's remote control robot parked outside.
Back at the Dragon King's lair, Henry tells Cindy about his worthlessness. It's a bitter hammer blow to her, and despite her pleas to join their group, Henry closes the lock on her face after she tells him she feels the same way her Father did.
Following this, he joins the Dragon King in a large circular room. With the pads attached to its temple, you'd be forgiven for thinking it's an upgraded version of Professor X's Cerebro. Lightning rips and strengthens Henry's powers. This allows him to hear the opinions of millions of people, and also confirms one thing - their experience will work.
Even more frightening, the death of Henry Jr. caused his Father to absorb these powers and make them even stronger.
With 8 hours left until the end of the world, it feels like a deep breath before the final battle. Mike and Courtney have a heart-to-heart outside and discuss being a superhero. Inside, Barbara asks Pat why he's keeping it a secret, and they share some touching moments.
Before long, Pat helps Rick crack the code and learns the truth about what Brainwave is planning. This opens up a map of the ISA's fabrications surrounding the aforementioned broadcast. To stop them, they must infiltrate the facility, break it apart, and destroy the equipment before it's too late.
After being defeated, Bowen arrives at Courtney's house and confronts the Sportsman and Tigres. He tells them to take a different tactic going forward. When reminded of how useless they are as parents, Tiger has had enough and fires an arrow into the Headmaster's face.
With 35 minutes to go, Beth goes to Barbara's office and enters a manifesto about the master plan. With universal healthcare and an anti-discrimination plan, the group questions whether they're on the wrong side.
Thankfully, they don't have to wait long as Beth finds what she's looking for. Given that a good portion of people would reject the mind control, it would eventually result in those who resisted (25 million people) dying as a result.
As they talk, Gambler suddenly walks into Beth's glasses. It turns out that the 30 minute mark is when the broadcast stops, not when it starts. As the adults freeze in place, Brainwave takes control. This includes Pat clenching his fist inside the robot and preparing to punch Courtney square in the jaw.
Episode Review
With this cliffhanger, things remain open for next week's finale. Will Courtney and the others be able to stop Brainwave before it's too late? Or will we get an agonizing cliffhanger ready for season 2?
Before you get there, this episode kicks off with a signal of intent, wasting little time getting into the action. Seeing Sportsmaster and Tiger ambush the house in the episode is a great touch and really well shot.
The idea of Mike and Barbara – the non-powered ones – saving the day is also a nice nod. The deep breath before the big fight works nicely, and the various little heartbreaks that happen here help give the episode some depth.
While Brainwave's machine looks suspiciously like a cerebro, there's enough here to like this layout. With big questions on top of that, Stargirl's finale is shaping up to be an unmissable episode.
