Stargirl DC Universe New Show Season 1 Episode No 5 Recap And Review

Stargirl Season 1

Episode No 5 Review And Recap

Stargirl returns this week with an episode that sees Courtney assemble her team and prepare for the battle ahead. With more backstory for the supporting cast and no noticeable supervillain action this time around, Stargirl continues to deliver entertaining drama, but this episode isn't as strong as some of the previous material we've been given.

Stargirl episode 5 begins 9 years ago in Blue Valley. When his parents, Wendi and Rex, leave in the middle of the night, a young boy named Rick is advised to stay with his uncle Matt. With $50,000 and Rick's last name changed for protection, his parents said their goodbyes and left. Just en route, their car is hit by Solomon Grundy.

We then cut to the present day where Rick and Matt's relationship is at least broken. Meanwhile, Courtney wakes up late for class and, after kicking her mom out, grabs an hourglass and runs down the stairs. Before leaving, Pat shows him a newspaper article and wonders if all the ISA members are in Blue Valley, including the Director, who might be "The Jackman".

For now, Courtney goes to school, where she discusses Injustice Society with Yolanda. Unbeknownst to them, Beth listens to their entire conversation after spying on them in the hospital last episode.

As school draws to a close, Courtney and Pat hit the road, but there's car trouble. When Rick comes over and discusses what's wrong with their motor, Pat realizes that he might be involved with the Justice Society, thanks in part to him discussing the yellow '66 Mustang. Courtney comes to the same conclusion, but she begins to glow in his presence through the hourglass she brought with her.

Beth goes to Courtney's house, only to find that Courtney has a pair of glasses courtesy of her dog. When he puts them on, he hears the voice of Dr. Charles' AI and begins to learn more about the world of superheroes he accidentally becomes involved in.

When Courtney returns home, the two begin discussing her disguise. Courtney tells her to go home, but Beth tries to help, realizing that Rick's Dad is Hourman, meaning Rick is going to take his Dad's place on their team. Meanwhile, Pat goes home, but gets a pretty frosty reception from Matt, prompting him to leave before long.

Later that evening, Yolanda is not happy that Beth is now part of their group and withdraws while attending Rick's Halloween party. Courtney and Beth leave to find their classmate. They finally encounter him in the garden and as the trio approach him. We learn that Hourman has superpowers for 1 hour of the day and is just a normal guy for the other 23 hours. Hearing this, Rick refuses the call to action and walks away, keeping the hourglass.

Courtney and Yolanda desperately try to reach Rick, who finally admits to suffering from anger. As he rejects them both, Beth approaches and manages to reach him by showing him the moments when Solomon Grundy killed Rick's parents with the glasses. Seeing this game, he agrees to help them, but only so that he can get revenge.

As the episode ends, with the Director playing the violin and working with the Doctor to mind control several truck drivers, Pat goes to Courtney's room and finds a bag of superhero gadgets firsthand and realizes what she's doing.

As the team begins to come together, and with plenty of interesting backstory for our disparate characters, the biggest takeaway here comes from Rick's motivation to join the new Justice Society. Driven by rage and revenge, could he potentially be tempted to work against them and join the BSA? It's definitely something that could be a possibility moving forward, but for now, I think we'll be rewarded with a fair amount of action in the coming weeks as Stargirl rallies the troops and Pat finds out what she's up to.

Stargirl kicks off this week with another fun episode, and while it's not as strong as some of the previous episodes, there's plenty to enjoy here, especially given the lack of action.
