Stargirl DC Universe New Show Season 1 Episode No 3 Recap And Review

Stargirl Season 1

Episode No 3 Review And Recap

After a few episodes of plot development, Stargirl slows down a bit for more character-driven drama, as the various members of the Injustice Society are given significant screen time to flesh out their personalities and motivations. It's a really clever idea, helping us understand their plight as the ever-present idea of the American Project hangs over Blue Valley like a dark cloud waiting to burst, raining hellfire.

We begin episode 3 of Stargirl 8 years ago in Blue Valley. Jordan's wife, Christy, is on her deathbed and promises him to put country first. "If anyone tries to stop you, destroy them," he whispered before he died.

In the present day, the victory over Brainwave sees Courtney go into high gear and decide to go after the ISA, one member at a time. Only Pat convinces him not to for now, given how dangerous it is, and promises to help get to the bottom of it in private. Things are crazier than usual at school. At school, William's son Joey approaches Courtney to play card tricks, but despite her picking the wrong card, he plays along, allowing her to enjoy the applause that follows.

Jordan arrives at the hospital and gets on the phone with William, eventually meeting to discuss Brainwave's plans and how he's never been a team player. For now, Jordan decides to take up the mantle and deal with Stargirl herself, starting with arriving at the office where Barbara happens to be working and settling in to oversee the project.

Back at school, Courtney stands up for one of the bullied girls and learns that Cameron was the one who removed the graffiti from the girl's locker. After class, they go their separate ways, but Jordan calls her out and leaves a message in the form of a star-shaped field freeze in the grass.

Realizing what this means, Stargirl and S.R.I.P.E. the two work together to confront Icicle. Although Pat slams Jordan into the bridge, he freezes in the process. Thankfully, Pat manages to free herself and save the school bus from certain doom. Only Joey doesn't see a speeding car pull up in front of him and is eventually shot in the process, bringing the fight to an abrupt end.

In the wake of this mess, William overcomes his grief, while Courtney and Pat talk about the various heroes who are now gone, including Wildcat and the Flash. Courtney decides to try and recruit new faces to fill the boots of what came before, and sets out to do just that.

Furious, William confronts Jordan and holds up a glow stick to her in her home. Only, Jordan freezes the man and kills both William and Joey, leaving his wife to drown in grief.

Cameron returns home where we learn that he is actually Jordan's son, making his friendship with Courtney even more interesting. Project: New America also continues to progress for Jordan as Courtney infiltrates Justice Society HQ and picks up tools from various heroes. "Let's do some recruiting," the duo happily tells the crew as they hurry off, which is where the episode ends.

Seeing Jordan and William both come alive here and given time to move beyond their stereotypical villain archetypes really helps give the show an extra layer of depth. The simple teenage drama is still here, of course, and tonally, the series balances the dark elements well, making it a lighter hit for its clearly target market.

The shootout with Icicle towards the end is also a nice addition, and it's clear that this fight isn't over. So far so good though, and there's enough here to pique curiosity and keep coming back to find out what Project: The New America really is. It will most likely be a cataclysmic, end-of-the-world event, but for now we are left in the dark. Continue next week!
