Stargirl Season 1
Episode No 2 Review And Recap
The cat and mouse game between Courtney and Brainwave throughout this episode is really well done in the school drama, and the ending certainly leaves things open for next week's episode.
Stargirl Episode 2 begins with Pat flying Courtney to safety, Brainwave gets out and takes the charred remains of Courtney's ID. As she plots her next move, Courtney learns more about Starman's past, including how Icicle killed her. Courtney impatiently demands to know what Brainwave is up to, but Pat begs her to keep quiet.
It turns out that Henry visits William's house in the middle of the night and reveals what happened to Starman's staff. He then tells William that they should move forward with Project: New America no matter what.
In the morning, Henry tries to find out from Junior if it was a girl who beat him and his friends, but he has trouble getting answers from his son. For now, Junior tells him it's too dark and he can't see clearly.
Meanwhile, Pat is trying to learn how to use the mech suit as she has never used it before. He starts making changes step by step while telling Courtney not to chase Brainwave, it will lead to bad things.
Like any normal teenager, Courtney doesn't listen and begins to repair and patch her costume. Later, he sits down to dinner with Beth, who makes a video call to her parents. It only works for Henry, who sees his mother Courtney on the phone and realizes that Courtney's profile matches the card she took.
He decided to go to the Open House at school that evening to meet Courtney, but it turns out our teenage super had the same idea.
Courtney sees Henry following her to the gymnasium later that evening and runs into a young girl in the school hallway. He tells her to bring the crew or he'll go after her, making sure Barbara faces an excruciating death.
When Pat finds out what's going on, he decides to go it alone and confronts Brainwave instead of handing over the crew. Feeling powerless, Courtney fights back tears as she talks to her mother, and Pat confronts Brainwave in her costume.
She's no match for Brainwave and finds herself trapped, but thankfully Courtney arrives with the crew, calling herself Stargirl and donning a new costume. He calls Pat his assistant and confronts him with the staff in hand, but Brainwave is too much. Pat manages to distract him long enough for Courtney to use the staff and impale him on Brainwave's head, putting him into a coma.
Back home, Courtney excitedly talks to Pat about her upcoming venture, telling him it should be called S.R.I.P.E. and trying to figure out when to hit their next target.
Meanwhile, Jordan arrives at the Injustice Society and talks to Steven about Brainwave, and decides to go after Stargirl with freezing cold air coming out of her mouth, the episode ends here.
Will Brainwave come at the end of the season and be desperate for revenge? Or could we see Junior step into the mantle and learn the extent of his powers? The scenes involving Henry and his son hint that Brainwave's son may have some hidden power we haven't seen yet, but for now it remains a theory rather than solid evidence.
With two musical montages and a flatter plot in this episode, the final act crescendos nicely in the parking lot. It remains to be seen if we'll now start seeing monster-of-the-week episodes to build on Pat and Courtney's relationship, but for now, the DC Universe's latest superhero drama delivers another decent episode.
