Stargirl Season 1
Episode No 9 Review And Recap
I hope that's not the case, and so far this first season has done a pretty good job of establishing a consistent tone and pace while introducing a whole group of diverse and interesting characters to the fray. It remains to be seen whether this conflict with ISA will be resolved this year, but for now there is enough to whet the appetite and keep coming back for more.
Episode 9 of Stargirl picks up decades ago as we see a brief but important origin story for Brainwave. His powers manifest with fear as he prevents an armed guard who works as a scientist and experiments on mice from brutally robbing him.
Back in the present, Brainwave's son finds his Father's suit and a set of tapes hidden in a closet. Grabbing a stack of videos, he listens to his father talk about his powers and starts to figure out what's going on. What begins as an optimistic, joyful series of experiences soon turns dark and twisted as Henry talks about using his powers to harm people.
As Henry Sr. telepathically connects with his son, Henry Jr. goes to the hospital and begins to hear the thoughts of everyone around him.
Meanwhile, Courtney talks to Pat and explains what happened with Henry's powers manifesting on the street. While Pat warns that the ISA is planning something big, Courtney wonders if she can convince Henry Jr. to fight on her team. This idea does not go down well with Yolanda and Rick, who reminds him of what he did and walks away.
Cindy finds herself in an underground prison and warns the Dragon King that she will kill him if he doesn't free her. Instead, he gasses the room and focuses on his new machine, which he envisions using for Little Henry's Project: New America. He confirms the same with the rest of the ISA during the meeting and they prepare for the next phase of the plan.
Pat calls Beth and Rick to the garage and sets them to work to find out if the tunnels will connect all of Blue Valley underground. As they sit together, Beth uses Rick's journal to learn more about their town's history.
Courtney makes her decision and heads to the hospital with the intention of meeting little Henry. Despite telling her that love triumphs over hate, she rejects him and forces Stargirl to leave. In his absence, Yolanda appears and confronts Henry, telling him to leave them all alone. Only by reading her thoughts does she lose sight of the fact that she loved him and betrayed him in the past.
Back home, Pat decides to check in with Barbara about her superhero business. Before he can, Jordan comes to dinner with his family. The steaming hot pot burns Courtney's hands, but Jordan picks it up with ease when she suddenly realizes it's Icicle.
As the evening draws to a close, Jordan and his family leave when they see Barbara Courtney's staff buzzing. Meanwhile, Henry uses his powers against a lawyer at a small hospital. As she falls to the ground writhing in pain.
Review Writing
Stargirl returns this week with a different twist, but plenty of drama to chew on. As Henry now begins to understand his powers, his twisted and distorted perception may be the key to what happens later in the season. Could we see Brainwave and his son have a foothold on the fate of the world? After all, it might make sense that the only person who can truly stop a telepath is another telepath.
That said, there are various wildcards that could make a big difference in this show, including Cindy, who won't be locked up for too long. How will Barbara react when she learns that her daughter is also Stargirl?
There are a lot of unanswered questions here, and it all looks like it's going to make for a pretty dramatic finale. For now, Stargirl continues to deliver a decent portion of superhero drama.
